| Former Chelsea and Cork Celtic forward Bobby Tambling has died at the age of 84. Bobby's haul of 202 goals in 370 appearances for the Blues made him the Stamford Bridge club's all-time top scorer until 2013, when Frank Lampard broke his record. |
| Bobby made his Chelsea debut as a 17-year-old in 1959 and was part of the side which won the League Cup in 1965, scoring against Leicester in the final. His five goals in a single match against Aston Villa in 1966 remains a Chelsea record, while he also netted a consolation in the 1967 FA Cup final defeat to Tottenham. He won three caps for England and had a spell at Crystal Palace before finishing his career in Ireland. |
| Having settled in Cork in 1973, he signed for Cork Celtic, where his attacking partnership with Alfie Hale helped power the club to their only league title victory in 1973-74. Bobby played for Cork Celtic until 1977, subsequently playing for Waterford, Shamrock Rovers and Cork Alberts. He later managed Cork City during their first season in the League of Ireland in 1984-85. |
| Having bravely battled a debilitating leg ailment for many years, he was later afflicted by dementia, an illness that has sadly touched so many of his footballing contemporaries. His death will be deeply mourned by generations of Chelsea supporters, football followers across the world, and by the thousands who came to know and admire him on Leeside, particularly in Crosshaven, where he became a cherished member of the local sporting community.
